Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a booming tourist trap filled with warm sand and sea water, bars, rides, and Ripley’s believe-it-or-not type attractions. Traveling with my family to the beach, I envisioned lying on the sand baking for most of my days, and an occasional night out. We were headed down for Bike Week with Biker Trash Nation. I felt I might be a bit out of my comfort zone due to the name of the group but I was always one to revel in my chance to observe, true to my introvert nature.
Upon arrival, we were bombarded by the sounds of bike engines, country tunes, and lots of leather. As soon as we parked the car, we snatched an airplane shot of liquor out of Devin’s bag, indicative of our days to come. The motley crew included me, my brother, Binny, his wife, Devin, my dad, also named Binny, and Sherri, dad’s “family friend.”
Our main reason for the trip was to see Havoc, my dad’s band, play at Spokes and Bones saloon. On the second night of the trip we arrive at the saloon and waddle around in awe of the many pimped out motorcycles parked there. After a few drinks of liquid courage, the band played, we danced haphazardly, and shouted lyrics that we half knew. My dad shimmied off stage and came down the aisle between the picnic booths, and even stopped to sing to me before making his way back up stage. Band member, Mark Weddington, shredded the guitar better than a shredder and paper. Bass player, Jace Weddington, brought amazing energy to pump up the crowd. Drummer, Jody Ayers, had the beats rockin’ all night long. Binny, lead singer, entranced the crowd with his voice – a perfect storm between Def Leppard and Van Halen. The band put on quite a show and we were all ready to hit the sack when we arrived back at the hotel.
The entirety of the trip included rainfall and griping from myself. Being used to the Arizona heat, I was more than happy sitting in the hotel room all day relaxing. The nights went on, the rock-and-roll bands played, and the bikers kept riding. Rain or shine took on a whole new meaning.
